Common Flower Types

Botanists tell us there are some 10,000 different kinds of flowers, a claim that's easy to believe with all the diversity found in many backyards and fields. But some flowers are more common than others, found in many different locations and easily recognized. Some of the most common types of flowers are listed here. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Daisies

    • There are more than 23,000 species of daisies, making the daisy family perhaps the most common flower of all. Varieties include the white-petaled, yellow-centered Shasta daisy, as well as the dahlia, the chrysanthemum and the aster.

    Roses

    • Roses were declared our national floral symbol by President Ronald Reagan. From the most elegant tea rose lovingly cultivated by dedicated gardeners to the lowly but fragrant wild rose growing in ditches all over the countryside, roses are known and loved for their sweet scent, soft petals and beautiful color.

    Pansies

    • Pansies are popular for many reasons, not the least of which is their pretty "face." They grow well in cool weather, making them a favorite in the northern hemisphere, and they are fragrant as well as edible.

    Morning Glories

    • Blue morning glories

Morning glories are often found growing naturally in the wild, but they are also a favorite of gardeners because of their attractive heart-shaped leaves, bright-colored flowers, and their ability to cover a fence. They reseed naturally, so you may not have to replant them every year.

    Petunias

    • Petunias are a popular flower due to their bright colors, strong fragrance, and ease of growth. They come in white, red, pink, and purple: the purple variety produce the strongest scent.
