What Do Blue Belly Lizards Look Like?

These reptiles have blue bellies from which they derive their name--"blue belly lizards." They are able to change colors similar to chameleons to blend in with their surroundings when predators are near.

  1. Features

    • While their bellies are a bright blue color, their backs are usually dark gray. Male lizards often have dark blue spots on their light blue bellies. They like to show it off to gain territorial control. Females tend to have more of a darker-colored blue belly.

    Size

    • The blue belly lizards can grow up to six inches long. Most of the adults average about four inches.

    Geography

    • These types of lizards live in the western states and are most populous in California. They have been seen in Utah, Oregon, Nevada and Idaho.

    Warning

    • Be very careful if you are brave enough to handle one of these lizards. Many of them will bite if scared or frightened.

    Benefits

    • Blue belly lizards have a neutralizing effect on Lyme disease. When the lizards are bit by a tick carrying Lyme disease, it will simply fall off and die. This reduces the numbers of disease-carrying ticks, and therefore helps to protect more humans and their pets from this disease.
