Intestinal parasites are common in dogs and cats, so your pet should be dewormed regularly. There are over-the-counter and prescription products that can treat your pet, depending on what type of worms has infected him.

  1. Piperzaine Salts

    • Hartz Advanced Care Liquid Wormer and Sergeant's Worm Away contain piperzaine salts, which treat roundworms. The medications can be used in dogs and cats that are at least 6 weeks old.

    Febendazole

    • Panacur and SafeGuard contain febendazole, which treats roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and certain types of tapeworms. These medications can be used in dogs and cats that are at least 6 weeks old.

    Pyrantel Pamoate

    • Strongid, Nemex, Drontal and Heartgard Plus contain pyrantel pamoate, which treats roundworms and hookworms. These medications can be given to cats that are at least 4 weeks old and weigh at least 1-1/2 pounds. It is safe for dogs that are at least 2 weeks old.

    Selamectin

    • Revolution contains the active ingredient selamectin, which treats roundworms and some non-intestinal parasites. It can be used on cats that are at least 8 weeks old.

    Praziquantel

    • Droncit and D-Worm contain praziquantel, which treats three different types of tapeworms and is safe in dogs that are at least 4 weeks old and cats that are at least 6 weeks old.
