About Menopause & Yeast Infections

After menopause, you at a much higher risk of getting a yeast infection. Fluctuating hormone levels make it difficult for your body to regulate the bacteria in your vagina. Yeast infections are actually one of the main symptoms of menopause.

  1. Vaginal Walls

    • During menopause, the walls of your vagina become thin, making them more susceptible to scrapes and tears.

    Infection

    • When the vaginal walls are torn, the vagina becomes more susceptible to infection.

    Hormone Replacement

    • If you take hormone replacement drugs, this can increase your vaginal discharge. A moist vagina is more prone to bacteria and yeast growth.

    Over-the-counter Treatment

    • Over-the-counter creams and suppositories are available to treat yeast infections.

    Yogurt

    • Plain yogurt with live cultures and good bacteria can be inserted into the vagina to restore bacteria levels.
