Job Description of a Gymnastics Coach

A gymnastics coach is typically someone who has a love of the sport. Gymnastics is youth-oriented, and once a competitor can no longer compete, it is likely that she will stay in the sport as a coach. Even if an injury causes a competitor to no longer be able to compete, coaching is an option.

  1. Knowledge

    • A gymnastics coach should have first-hand knowledge of the skills required to do gymnastics. Education and training in spotting techniques and other requirements are necessary to receive certifications needed to coach gymnastics.

    Support System

    • In competitive gymnastics, a coach encourages students to achieve by building their confidence.

    Time Frame

    • Being a gymnastics coach is not a day job. Gym hours vary because many gymnastics students train after regular school hours and on weekends.

    Choreography

    • Along with teaching skills, coaches choreograph routines for their students, based on the students' skill levels and abilities.

    Considerations

    • Gymnastics coaches need to be physically strong in order to help students learn gymnastics. Spotting can mean supporting the student's weight in order to keep her from injury.
