Different Types of Braces

Braces move teeth into a new position in the mouth or fix a misaligned bite. An orthodontist with input from the patient will decide the kind of brace needed.

  1. Fixed or Removable Braces

    • A fixed brace stays in the mouth all the time, and the orthodontist will need to remove it with a removable brace. The patient is able to take it out as necessary.

    Brackets

    • A bracket is the part of the brace that attaches to the tooth at the front or back, or wraps around the whole tooth. A bracket is made of metal or ceramic, and can be clear or tooth-colored.

    Rubber Bands

    • Rubber bands are available in a variety of colors to attach to the brackets. The bands connect upper to lower teeth, to create an opposing tension and move teeth gently.

    Wires

    • Wires attach to the brackets and guide the realignment of the teeth. The orthodontist will check wires frequently to tighten or loosen as necessary for as long as one to three years.

    Retainers

    • Once the fixed or removable brace comes out, another kind of brace is used, called a retainer. It keeps the newly aligned teeth fixed into position. It is a removable appliance.
