Are Pig Ears Healthy?
Dried ears from pigs are used as dog treats. But you shouldn't offer them to your pet until you know some basics about them.
-
Fat Content
-
A high-fat treat like pig ears can irritate a susceptible dog's pancreas, resulting in pancreatitis. Obesity from excessive fatty treats can bring on health problems like arthritis and diabetes.
Gastrointestinal Problems
-
Pig ears are digestible when properly chewed. Dogs can bite off large chunks of the ears and swallow them whole, which could result in a scratched esophagus, stomach upset and bowel obstruction. You can cut the ear into smaller pieces to be sure your dog does not bite off and swallow large chunks.

Bacterial Infections
-
Pig ears produced in the United States are inspected and should be free of bacterial infections such as Salmonella, but there is no guarantee because there is always some risk with pork-based treats. To reduce the risk, avoid pig ears processed outside the United States.
Moderation
-
Use pig ears as treats in moderation. Although they are not a "healthy" treat, pig ears can be consumed safely if an owner takes precautions.
Warning
-
Owners should wash their hands with soap and warm water anytime they handle pork treats to keep from being infected by Salmonella.
