Post-Hysterectomy Breast Pain

Breast pain or tenderness is not uncommon in women who have undergone hysterectomies.

  1. Hysterectomy Definition

    • Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman's uterus. It is performed abdominally, vaginally or laparoscopically.

    Oophorectomy

    • Oophorectomy, also called ovariectomy, is the removal of the ovaries, performed in many hysterectomies.

    Ovariectomy Effects

    • A woman's primary source of the hormone estrogen is the ovaries, so ovariectomy results in much less estrogen in the body.

    Menopause

    • If the woman is not already menopausal, removing the ovaries puts her into menopause. Side effects of menopause include hot flashes, sleep disorders and vaginal dryness.

    Hormone Replacement Therapy

    • Doctors may prescribe estrogen, also referred to as hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, to relieve the menopausal symptoms. While estrogen relieves certain symptoms, it may cause pain and tenderness in the breasts.

    Breast Pain or Sensitivity

    • If taking HRT and experiencing breast tenderness, consult with the doctor to see if a different form of the drug, such as a patch or vaginal ring, may be used. If not on HRT, try massage or hot compresses to relieve breast pain, or take an over-the-counter product such as aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. If pain persists, call the doctor.
