Flea & Mite Bites

Fleas and mites are parasites that burrow into your pet´s skin in order to feed. If left untreated, they may lead to extreme irritation and infections. Fleas target all parts of the body, while mites most commonly burrow into the lining of the ear canal.

  1. Fleas

    • Fleas are usually visible upon inspection. The main sign of infestation is that your pet is itching persistently, often all over the body. Due to severe scratching, secondary symptoms include bleeding, hair loss and skin infections.

    Mites

    • Signs of mite infestation include heavy scratching and sensitivity around the ears, restlessness and persistent head-shaking. Your pet may also develop a foul smelling odor and/or brown material originating from the ears. This may indicate a secondary bacterial infection.

    Transmission

    • Fleas and mites jump from pet to pet. They may be transmitted between species of pets. In addition, these pests may remain in previously infested environments, waiting for a new host.

    Treatment

    • There are various forms of flea and mite treatment on the market, including collars, sprays and pills. Some focus solely on fleas or mites, while others target both. Certain treatments are more immediate in order to control symptoms, killing adult pests; other medications, such as the pills, target eggs, attacking the root of the infestation.

    Prevention

    • Certain medications, especially sprays and collars, may be used for preventative measures. The most important measure you may take prior to a flea or mite infestation is to treat the environment before introducing your pets. In addition, if one pet becomes infested, it is important to treat all pets in the household in order to prevent transmission.
