Comparison Between Cricket & Baseball

Cricket and baseball are both sports played with a bat and ball. However, the sports differ significantly in team size, game length, field size and game play.

  1. Team Size

    • In baseball, the fielding team has nine players defending against one batter. In cricket, the defending team has 11 fielders and the team that is batting has two batsmen, one at each wicket.

    Game Length

    • A baseball game has nine innings while a cricket match has two. However, every player bats in a cricket inning while in baseball a team only bats until it gets three outs.

    Playing Field

    • Baseball is played in a quarter circle. Only balls that land inside the sector are in play. In cricket, the field is an oval with the batsmen in the center so there is no such thing as a foul ball.

    Game Play

    • In baseball, teams score by advancing batters around the bases and getting them back to home plate without getting out. In cricket, teams score a run each time the two batsmen switch places. If the ball is hit out of the cricket field on a fly, six runs are awarded. If it bounces or rolls out, only four runs are awarded.

    Recording Outs

    • In baseball, a batter can be gotten out by catching the ball on the fly, tagging the runner with the ball, touching the base the batter must advance to or striking the batter out. In cricket, the batter can also be out by catching the ball on the fly or by knocking the bail off the wickets.

    Fun Fact

    • When a ball is hit into the stands during a baseball game, the fans may keep the ball. In cricket, fans must return the ball to play.
