Composite Decking Type of Nails
Composite decking is a series of boards that are made of a combination of plastic and wood fibers. It has a much longer lifespan than standard wooden decking and is very low maintenance. There are several types of composite decking nails to fasten and build structures. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Function
-
Composite decking nails function as the main fastener for the boards to stay in tact. Many companies specify additional joint fasteners that coordinate with the composite decking nails.
Types
-
There are two main types of composite decking nails. Stainless steel and double-dipped galvanized nails are strong and durable enough to endure the life of the deck and withstand the elements.
-
Size
-
Galvanized and stainless steel nails are available in a wide range of sizes. Galvanized nails range from 2 to 6 inches in length and most stainless steel decking nails range from 2 to 3 1/2 inches long.
Considerations
-
The nails must be able to penetrate the wooden substrate under the decking by 1 1/2 inches. The correct length of nails will depend on the thickness of the decking that is chosen.
Recommendation
-
Milled face hammers are abrasive and are not recommended for driving hot-dip galvanized nails because it will rub off the dipped coating on the nails and reduce their durability.
