Catalog Modeling for Children
Pop culture paints catalog modeling as a glamorous occupation that accompanies an equally carefree lifestyle full of beautiful clothes and beautiful people. Modeling can be a fun and rewarding part-time job for confident, outgoing children, but the industry is competitive, and scams abound. It is important for children and parents to avoid taking rejection to heart. A few simple guidelines may improve greatly your chances of a child successfully modeling for a catalog.
-
Portfolio
-
Every model or potential model needs a portfolio with at least one head shot and one full body shot. Professional images tend to be expensive and are not as important for younger children who grow and change rapidly. At least one of these images should show a natural, relaxed smile, and there should be only one child in each shot.
If an agency signs your child, keep them updated with snapshots of changing looks such as missing teeth or new haircuts.
Measurements
-
Do not lie about your child's measurements. Agencies and casting directors often measure children before hiring them for a job, and professionals in the industry have experience on the subject that allows them to eyeball a child and accurately estimate her height and weight.
-
Casting Calls
-
Children younger than 17 should never attend casting calls alone. The parent or guardian's signature will be required if the agency or its client wishes to sign a child. Research the company carefully before attending a casting call.
Agencies
-
Agencies make money after a model completes a paying job by taking a commission from the model's payment. Do not pay an agency for the service of representing a child.
Temperament
-
Modeling for catalogs can be tiring, time-consuming work. Child models need an upbeat attitude and an easy-going temperament to make it through the day and work with people of all ages. Children who are not interested and excited about modeling should not be pushed to do so.
