Electrician Training for Residential Construction
Electricians work in three different career fields: residential, commercial and industrial. Residential is the lowest level of electrical work, requiring the least amount of study hours and less time to completely understand.

Residential construction refers to the building of houses or living complexes. Residential wiring focuses on the wiring of home spaces to accommodate for household appliances rather than large machinery or appliances in commercial and industrial buildings.
Training

Many electricians never advance beyond residential work, though those that advance to commercial or industrial work must learn the basics of residential work first.

Apprenticeship

One way many electricians develop their skills in order to become licensed is to work as an apprentice under a licensed or master electrician. In order to become a licensed electrician, an apprentice must work in the field for five years.
Trade School

Electrical engineering is taught at many trade schools and covers mainly residential wiring, while also contributing a few classes towards commercial and residential wiring. Trade school helps to shorten the apprenticeship time to become a licensed electrician, requiring only two more years of apprenticeship after completion of a certification program.
Time

To become a licensed electrician to work in any field of wiring, an apprentice must seek apprenticeship for two to five years, depending on any additional educational training in the field. Once licensed, the individual electrician may decide to work in the residential field exclusively, based on their experience and level of comfort and familiarity with the field.
