Difference Between the GRE and GMAT
Both the GRE and GMAT are standardized tests required for the graduate-school admissions process. However, the graduate program and school dictate which test should be taken.

GRE

The GRE, or Graduate Record Examinations, General Test focuses on general skills needed to succeed in graduate school. There are also GRE Subject Tests in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology; biology; chemistry; computer science; literature in English; mathematics; physics; and psychology.
GMAT

The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, focuses on skills needed for a graduate degree in business and management.

Format

Both the GRE General Test and GMAT test analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning. Both tests have adaptive computer-based exams that analyze responses and provide new questions based on the performance on previous questions.
Preparation

Both tests have free preparation software available for download on their official websites. A variety of third-party vendors offers preparation courses, and a range of preparation materials is available in many bookstores.
Scoring

The analytical-writing sections of both tests score between zero and six, with half-point increments. The total scoring and scoring of the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections is subject to change. Check the official websites for current information.
