What Are the Benefits of MBT Shoes?
To call it a "shoe" would be contrary to what its makers had in mind. In fact, this boat-like design footwear is better known as the anti-shoe. The MBT, which stands for Masai Barefoot Technology, was designed with ergonomic movements in mind.
-
History
-
Created in the mid-90s, the MBT makers discovered through research in clinical medicine and physiotherapy that the human body was not designed to walk or stand on hard, flat surfaces. Their goal was to prove that the movement of our steps has a direct link to our posture and our joint health.
Benefits
-
The unstable rolling motion of the MBT creates benefits beyond its natural bounce. According to the MBT Web site, they "help solve knee and back problems, relieve tension in the neck, ease joint pains---and more or less in passing help tone and shape firm buttocks and thighs." The company also claims that you're sure to burn more calories in MBTs than traditional shoes just by standing still.
-
Function
-
The movement was designed to simulate walking barefoot in the sand or on uneven, natural ground. According to podiatrists, this "natural instability" is very significant to the design of this shoe because it's how our bodies were ultimately designed to create balance, support muscle structure and compose good posture and gait.
Cost & Cons
-
The biggest con is actually the cost. Most MBTs range from 200 to 300 dollars a pair and rarely ever go on sale, as of 2010. The style can take some getting use too as well, with some fashionistas comparing them to orthopedic styled shoes because of the almost 2-inch thick soles. Also, if you already have balance problems, can't walk stable barefoot, or have a history of falling, this shoe may not be for you.
Duplicates
-
Other manufacturers are now deciding to rock on the heels of MBT's revolutionary design. Skechers' launched its "Shape Ups" line in early 2009 and has since received the endorsements of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and fitness superstar Denise Austin.
