How Far Apart Do You Plant Bamboo Columns?

Spacing between bamboo columns depends on the type of bamboo, the purpose of the planting and how quickly you want the bamboo to grow into its purpose. Choosing the right type for that purpose will help determine the distance between plants.

Types

Bamboo falls into two general categories, clumping and running. The rhizomes, or underground stems, of clumping varieties spread a few inches from the main root clump. The rhizomes of running varieties move rapidly out to varying distances from the main clump before sending up shoots.

A Screen

Bamboo's landscaping uses range from privacy screening of varying heights to low-growing ground covers. Choose a bamboo for screening based on how dense you want the screening to be.

Ground Cover

The running types of bamboo do not grow as tall as the clumping types, as a general rule. However, many varieties are aggressive spreaders and will quickly outgrow their space if you don't contain them.

Spacing

For an effective screen in one or two seasons, plant your clumping bamboo 3 to 6 feet apart (center to center). Some fast-spreading running bamboos can be planted up to 8 feet apart.

Considerations

Spacing between your bamboo plants depends on which type you choose, your purpose and your patience. Keep these considerations in mind when you select your plants ,and ask the advice of your nursery or plant seller.
