What Type of College Classes Are Required to Become a Dental Hygienist?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental hygiene is an occupation with many job opportunities and a very favorable outlook. Dental hygienists may work full or part time and may perform complex procedures.

Prerequisites

Students may enter dental hygiene programs straight out of high school or after college. Some programs prefer students to have one year of college.

Course Work

Dental hygiene classes focus on radiology, gum disease, dental structure, nutrition, microbiology and physiology. Students may also take classes in social or behavioral health, since they will be working with people.

College Classes

Students who anticipate entering dental hygiene training after college should take college course work in biology, chemistry, mathematics, nutrition, or anatomy.

Degree

You can receive a certificate, associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. To obtain a dental hygienist position, a certificate or associate is typically fine; a bachelor's or master's is ideal for those hoping to work in public health.

Exam

After finishing a program, students must pass a written and clinical examination before becoming accredited by their state.
