Anklet Etiquette
Anklets, or ankle bracelets, are created from a variety of materials and are worn by women all over the world. While many of the rules concerning "anklet etiquette" are no longer strictly adhered to in many countries, there are still standard rules and historical information that anklet wearers may want to know.
-
Married/Unmarried Women
-
Traditionally, women who were single wore the anklet on their right ankle. Married women wore the anklet on their left ankle--the same side as their wedding ring.
Where to Wear the Anklet
-
Anklets are generally bigger than bracelets, so some women wear the anklet on their upper arm. In the 1970s, high school girls were given anklets by their boyfriends as a sign that they were "going steady"--and the anklet was attached to a chain and worn around the neck.
-
One or Both Ankles
-
Most women only wear one anklet, but in India and some parts of the Middle East, women wear ankle bracelets on both ankles. Wearing an anklet on both ankles is also a preference for many American women.
Anklet Material
-
Most anklets are made from gold or silver, and have charms. Anklets can also be made from bright-colored cloth and beads.
Men
-
It is generally okay for men to wear anklets, but men usually choose to wear anklets made from rugged materials like hemp, or with "charms" like small conch shells. Surfers are often seen with anklets, since this type of jewelry tends to compliment cargo shorts and swimming trunks well.
