Small appliance safety

Small appliances are so common in American homes that few people get through the day without using at least a few. Practicing small appliance safety measures is an important part of everyday life as well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Electricity

    • The Electrical Safety Foundation International lists safety measures for avoiding electrical hazards with small appliances. These safety measures Include inspecting cords for cracks, keeping electrical appliances out of water, and making sure that appliances are approved by independent testing laboratories.

    Heat

    • Avoid burns by keeping your fingers away from hot irons, curling irons, the insides of toasters and hot electric skillets. An electric blanket will burn skin if it is folded over or has something lying on top of it.

    Sharp Edges

    • Stay away from sharp edges on appliances such as on electric knives, food processors, blenders and coffee grinders.

    Moving Parts

    • Keep your hands away from moving parts, such as mixer beaters, vacuum beater brushes and garbage disposal parts.

    Fire

    • Fires can start if small appliances are left plugged in, especially those that heat, such as coffeepots, irons, electric blankets and electric griddles. A small microwave oven can cause a big fire if you put metal inside it when you cook.
