Canine Allergy Medications: Prednisone

Prednisone is a powerful and effective drug that helps with many canine conditions, including allergies. It must be used carefully, however. Work closely with your veterinarian to discuss the use of prednisone, its possible side effects and how to give this medication correctly and safely.

  1. Prednisone

    • Prednisone is a corticosteroid that has anti-inflammatory properties. It is available in different forms, such as oral, topical and injection, and must be prescribed by a veterinarian.

    Uses

    • Prednisone is prescribed for conditions such as allergic reactions, Addison's disease, shock and inflammation. It can help reduce the itching, swelling, hives and other discomforts associated with allergies.

    Side Effects

    • Some possible side effects of prednisone include fatigue, extreme hunger or thirst, muscle weakness and upset stomach.

    Dangers

    • The use of prednisone can cause more serious side effects, such as high blood pressure, allergic reaction and metabolic changes. Long-term use should be discussed with your veterinarian, and dosages must be followed carefully.

    Other Considerations

    • Prednisone suppresses the immune system, so should not be given to dogs that are fighting an infection. Tell your veterinarian about any medication your dog may be on and of any medical condition your dog may have, such as diabetes or kidney, heart or liver disease. Alert your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or lactating.
