Uterine Ablation Procedures

Uterine ablation, also called endometrial ablation, is a technique designed to control or stop heavy menstrual bleeding. Ablation procedures may involve a number of different effective treatment options.

  1. The Facts

    • Endometrial ablation involves the destruction of the endometrium, a thin layer lining the interior of the uterus, according the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Ablation procedures are typically performed on premenopausal women.

    Pre-Treatment Testing

    • Before treatment, doctors will typically perform testing including ultrasound examination to make sure that endometrial ablation is appropriate, reports the ACOG.

    Treatment Options

    • The ACOG cites methods of destroying the endometrium that include radiofrequency energy, microwave energy, freezing and use of heated fluids or balloons.

    Electrosurgery

    • Doctors may also destroy the endometrium using a technique called electrosurgery, which involves the use of electrical energy applied with a telescoping device called a resectoscope. Typically, this method requires general anesthesia, notes the ACOG.

    Considerations

    • MaineGeneral Health notes that ablation may produce mild cramping and temporary fatigue. Typically, patients may resume their usual activities within one or two days of treatment.
