Minnesota Youth Firearms Safety Training

In Minnesota, youths who have an interest in firearms and hunting can receive a license after completing a firearms safety training.

  1. Training Course

    • The firearms safety course is a minimum of 12 hours. Some topics discussed are how to use a firearm, safety measures, and how to be responsible when hunting. The class will include learning in a classroom, as well as field experience. The child will also have the opportunity to practice using a rifle at a range.

    Requirements

    • Youth must be at least 11 years old to take the course and receive a license. To be able to use a firearm, young people must have a Department of Natural Resources Firearms Certification from attending the course, or an Apprentice Hunter Validation.

    Apprentice Hunter Validation

    • The Apprentice Hunter Validation allows a youth to have a one-year permit to go hunting, even if they do not have a Firearms Safety Certificate. The youth must be over the age of 12 and be with a licensed adult hunter.

    Fees

    • The cost of taking the Firearms Safety Course ranges from $7.50 to $15. This fee is collected at the class by the instructor.

    When

    • Classes are offered twice a year. Classes in the spring are offered in February and fall classes are available in July.
