What Is GSM?

GSM, an acronym for Global System for Mobile Communications, is a digital mobile phone technology that is popular in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. A subscriber with a GSM phone can access and use a GSM network.

  1. History

    • The first GSM networks were established in 1991, and were only able to transmit voice calls. Twenty years later, GSM technology allows users to access the Internet through mobile broadband, and offers rich multimedia features.

    Popularity

    • In 2010, there are nearly 800 GSM-based networks operating in 219 countries, and serving over three billion customers. GSM technology also supports related industries, such as handset manufacturers and software developers.

    Bands

    • GSM networks in the U.S., such as T-Mobile, operate on a frequency of 1900 MHz (megahertz). GSM networks in most parts of Europe and Asia use either 900 MHz or 1800 MHz.

    Roaming

    • A user in one GSM network can use another network in a different region. This is possible because GSM operators have "roaming" agreements that allow their subscribers to use a partner network.

    GPRS

    • GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a related technology that enables a GSM network to offer wireless data service to its subscribers. A subscriber with a multimedia phone will be able to access all GPRS features.
