New Jersey Massage Therapist Certification

The New Jersey State legislature passed the Massage, Bodywork and Somatic Therapist Certification Act on August 8, 1999, requiring all massage therapists to obtain state licenses or certification before working in the field. The New Jersey Board of Nursing oversees the process.

  1. Features

    • To receive massage therapist certification in New Jersey, professionals must submit a written application, an application fee and a certification fee to the New Jersey State Board of Nursing. As of March 2010, the cost of these fees were $75 and $120, respectively.

    Education and Experience

    • Students who complete a massage therapy certificate or associate degree program that is approved by the state of New Jersey qualify for the state certification. For therapists who have worked in the field full-time for two years or part-time for five years and have 200 hours of massage training without receiving a degree or certificate also qualify.

    Examination

    • Individuals who have neither the education nor the experience necessary for New Jersey massage therapist certification can take the certification offered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork or the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to receive state certification.

    Reciprocity

    • Massage therapists who can present written proof of a massage therapy license or certification from another state qualify for certification in New Jersey.

    Other Requirements

    • In addition to meeting the education, experience, examination or reciprocity requirements, massage therapists must also have CPR and first aid certification and submit two personal letters of recommendation as well as proof of citizenship or immigration status. Applicants must also pass a criminal background check to receive New Jersey massage therapist certification.
