Solutions to Bunion Problems

Latin for "enlargement," a bunion is just that, an enlargement of the base joint of a person's big toe. The most common cause of bunions is the wearing of a too tight shoe for a long period. Other causes include an imbalance in walking by putting excess pressure on the toes, and while not genetic, bunions can run in a person's family. There are a few ways to help alleviate the pain and pressure caused by bunions other than over-the-counter pain medication.

  1. Footwear

    • Purchase shoes that are not tight and have a roomy toe section and good arch support. If purchasing sandals, look for those that have good arch supports.

    Support

    • Arch support or orthotics helps redistribute a person's weight on the foot and relieves pressure on the big toe.

    Pads and Splints

    • Bunion pads, which come in a variety of sizes, or felt pads can be placed over the bunion to keep the bunion from rubbing against the shoe. Toe splints can be worn at night, in bed, to help keep the toe straight and reduce pain while sleeping.

    Stretching

    • Seek out a shoe-repair service that can stretch out the sides of a person's shoe to allow the bunion space in the shoe.

    Surgery

    • Often used as a last resort, surgery helps remove and straighten the joint and toe. A person should consult with her physician to see if surgery is the proper course of action.
