Insecticides are used to treat fleas and ticks on cats and dogs. Pyrethrins and permethrin are two common ingredients used in these insecticides.

  1. Identification

    • Permethrin is a synthetic-based chemical insecticide that is used to treat fleas. However, it should be noted that most permethrin-based products are labeled only for use on canines.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms occur within six hours of application on a cat and can include vomiting, lethargy, drooling, muscle tremors and seizures.

    Diagnosis

    • To confirm a permethrin toxicity in cats, the veterinarian will perform a physical exam and inquire about recent application of topical flea products.

    Treatment

    • Cats who are diagnosed with permethrin toxicosis will require immediate bathing to remove any remaining flea product from the skin. There may also be medications to treat seizures or muscle spasms.

    Prognosis

    • When treated early, most cats can return home within one to two days. However, the cat may continue to experience muscle tremors for several days following treatment.
