Vulvar Fold Pyoderma in Dogs

Skin infections can be very uncomfortable for dogs, especially when they are in the genital region. Careful veterinary care can help get a case of vulvar fold pyoderma under control and the prognosis for this condition is very good.

  1. Vulvar Fold Pyoderma

    • Vulvar fold pyoderma is a skin infection around the folds of a dog's vulva.

    Causes

    • Bacteria thrive in the moist, dark environment of skin folds and urine and vaginal secretions can accumulate in that region.

    Symptoms

    • The dog's vulva may be red, itchy, crusty, have yellow pustules or experience hair loss. The area may have a foul smell and the dog may lick at the region or have recurring urinary tract infections.

    Frequency

    • Vulvar fold pyoderma is more common in obese dogs or those who were spayed at a very early age.

    Treatment

    • Antibiotics, topical treatments and corrective surgery are the treatment options available for vulvar fold pyoderma. A veterinarian can diagnose and treat this condition.
