The Meaning of Global Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when you use another writer's words as your own.

Global plagiarism takes place when a writer presents the entire speech or text of another as his own. Plagiarism of any kind produces unfavorable reactions from educational facilities, the literary world and the public in general.

Etymology

The word "plagiarism" originates from the Latin word "plagiare," which signifies the kidnapping of a person or thing.

Definition

Using and presenting as one's own the entire content of another person's text qualifies as global plagiarism, unlike "patchwork" plagiarism, where parts of texts from different writers are claimed as original. "Incremental" plagiarism occurs when a writer fails to mention the names of the sources from which he has quoted or paraphrased.

Effects

Plagiarism charges can lead others to question the person's honesty, ability and sense of ethics. College students found guilty of plagiarism face issuance of a failing grade and a permanent mark on their educational record.

Law

In the U.S., acts of plagiarism can lead to prosecution on charges of copyright infringement.

Prevention/Solution

Plagiarism can be avoided by properly crediting the authors and texts used in research and throughout a work.
