Melatonin does not require a prescription, but it is wise to have the recommendation from your veterinarian before beginning melatonin treatment. A smaller dog can have .5 to 1 mg every 8 hours while a larger dog can have 3 to 9 mg.

Melatonin that is combined with corticosteroids and oxidase inhibitors can cause possible adverse effects. Melatonin has been proven to have had successful results in 75 percent of dogs when given at the onset of a thunderstorm.
