If your dog is boarded, you may need to have him vaccinated against kennel cough

Kennel cough is not just one disease but is actually a condition caused by several types of viruses and bacteria that are highly contagious. Kennel cough is an upper respiratory disease that can cause serious coughing and hacking in dogs.

  1. Types

    • There are three types of kennel cough vaccine that protects against Bordetella Brochiseptica, Canine Parainfluenza, and Canine Adenovirus 2. The Bordetella vaccine is given either through an injectable or through nose drops; Canine Parainfluenza, and Canine Adenovirus 2 are often given with a distemper/parvovirus combination.

    Considerations

    • These vaccines only work for one year, and in the case of the Bordetella vaccine, the efficacy may only last six months.

    Misconceptions

    • Pet owners who vaccinate their dogs against kennel cough still must take care as the vaccines do not protect against all forms of kennel cough. Your dog may still contract kennel cough even though vaccinated.

    Effects

    • Most boarding kennels will not take a dog without the Bordetella vaccination.

    Warning

    • Vaccinations can cause reactions which need to be treated by a veterinarian immediately. Signs of a vaccination reaction include swollen face, hives, difficulty breathing or even anaphylactic shock.
