What Is a Cardiologist Technician?

Cardiologist technicians assist doctors in diagnosing and treating heart and blood vessel diseases. They are responsible for a wide variety of job duties and may specialize in different areas of cardiology.

What They Do

Cardiac technicians assist cardiologists with diagnostic procedures, such as electrocardiograms, Holter monitoring and stress tests. They may schedule appointments, take vital signs, explain procedures and maintain cardiac equipment.

Work Environment

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 77 percent of cardiac technicians and technologists work in hospitals. The job involves a lot of walking, standing and some heavy lifting.

Education and Training

Most EKG technicians are trained on the job by a cardiologist or EKG supervisor. Training usually takes four to six weeks. Candidates are usually already in the health-care field, such as a nurse's aide. An associate degree is usually required to advance to cardiac technologist.

To become a cardiac technician, you need a relaxed manner to help put people at ease. You should have mechanical aptitude and the ability to follow detailed instructions.
