Exercise Instructor Certification

Exercise instructor certification is available through many different organizations and programs. Many gyms will require certification through a reputable, established organization. There will usually be other requirements that one should look into.

    • Most gyms will not hire instructors who do not have a valid certification due to liability issues.

    Types

    • There are several certifications that are widely respected by most gyms. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) both have long track records. Many colleges offer certification programs that last for a number of weeks.

    Time Frame

    • Most certifications are not permanent. Typically, they will last between one and two years. Most certifications can be maintained through continuing education.

    • Certification programs should include the following topics: anatomy, exercise techniques, program design and injury prevention.
