Massage Therapy Code of Ethics
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, the Code of Ethics "is a summary statement of the standards by which massage therapists agree to conduct their practices and is a declaration of the general principles of acceptable, ethical, professional behavior."
-
Commitment and Individual Worth
-
A massage therapist demonstrates her commitment to providing the highest quality bodywork to all seeking her services. She must acknowledge the individual worth of each client by not behaving in any prejudicial or discriminating manner.
Open Disclosure
-
A practitioner should represent his qualifications honestly and should accurately inform clients, health-care providers and the public of the scope and limitations of his discipline.
-
Confidentiality
-
A massage therapist always protects the confidentiality of all client information unless disclosure is requested by the client in writing, is medically necessary, required by law or is essential to protect the public.
Sexual Conduct
-
According to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), a therapist should refrain from initiating or engaging in any sexual activity with a client unless there was a preexisting relationship prior to certification.
Refusals
-
A massage therapist has the right to refuse treatment for just and reasonable cause and must refuse all gifts or benefits designed to influence a referral, decision or treatment.
