What Is a Scrub Tech?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the demand for scrub techs, or surgical technologists, will increase by 25 percent from 2008 to 2018. Spurred by an aging U.S. population, this growth is estimated to create over 23,000 new jobs.

  1. Function

    • Scrub techs perform tasks that require only minimal medical training, which allows surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists to focus on operations and patient care.

    Duties

    • Duties of scrub techs include setting and cleaning up the operating room, preparing patients for surgery by washing and shaving them and passing items to surgeons during operations. Technicians also count the number of sponges, clamps and other tools used before or after a surgery in order to prevent an implement from being left in a patient, reports the BLS.

    Features

    • Scrub techs must have the ability to multitask, work in fast-paced, stressful environments and withstand the sight of blood and bodily fluids. Techs often work evening, overnight and weekend hours.

    Education

    • Employers will hire scrub techs who have a certificate or associates degrees in surgical technology. These programs typically require between nine and 24 months to complete.

    Compensation

    • As of 2008, scrub techs averaged annual salaries of $40,070, according to the BLS.
