What Is 24K Gold?

Gold, symbolized by Au on the periodic table, is a rare metal known for its beauty and conductive properties. The proportion of gold in an item is measured in karats.

Karats

Each karat represents the proportion of solid gold in an item based on 24 parts. For example, 18 karat gold is 18 parts of gold and 6 parts other metals. 24 karat gold is 100 percent gold.

Uses

In addition to its use in jewelry, 24 karat gold is often used for special coins and occasionally in audio equipment.

Refining

Gold ore is refined through a process called amalgamation. During the process, the gold ore is mixed with mercury, as mercury will bond with the gold. The mercury is then removed from the gold through retorting. Gold can also be dissolved in aqua regia, a mixture of acids, and in sodium or potassium cyanide for recovery from low-grade ore.

Effects

Because of its high gold content, 24 karat gold items are the most expensive.
