What Does SAE Translate To?

SAE is an acronym for the Society of Automotive Engineers; an international organization that provides a technical community for engineers across mobile system industries. The SAE also provides product standards and technical information for each individual field that is a part of their organization.

  1. Standards

    • Technical standards for global mobility development is created and endorsed by the SAE. Professionals from across mobile fields such as commercial vehicle industries, military, aerospace and automotive disciplines participate in the development of this documentation.

    Origins

    • The SAE was founded in 1905, resulting from automotive engineers having a desire to form a technical society with the purpose of exchanging industry-related information.

    Fuels and Lubricants

    • Automotive oil is a product where many people might recognize the SAE name. The Fuels and Lubricants council is the authoritative body responsible for setting policy, providing documentation and arbitrating controversial issues related to automotive energy and lubricants.

    Automotive Service

    • Servicing standards for vehicles within the automotive industry are developed by the Service Development Technical Steering Committee. This committee creates, maintains and recommends servicing practices for maintaining and servicing highway vehicles. It also publishes guidelines for towing and lifting vehicles.

    Trucks and Buses

    • Truck, van, utility vehicle and bus maintenance standards is created by the SAE's Trucks and Bus Council. This particular committee has the responsibility reviewing and approving methods of repair for vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds. Maintenance for the vehicles components and accessories are a part of their standard recommendations.
