Each state has its own safety seat laws.

Each state has its own laws regarding child seat belt safety. Oregon's laws apply to children up to age 8.

  1. Infants

    • Infants must ride rear-facing in approved child safety seats until they are at least 1 year old and weigh at least 20 pounds, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

    Child Safety Seats

    • Children under 40 pounds must ride in a child safety seat properly buckled and secured in the car.

    Booster Seats

    • Children under the age of 8 but who weigh more than 40 pounds must ride seat belted into a booster seat until they reach 4 feet 9 inches tall.

    Child Seat Recommendations

    • Although not specifically mentioned in Oregon law, the state follows the general car seat guidelines set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which recommends keeping a children rear-facing until they reach weight and height limits set by the safety seat's manufacturer.

    Back Seat

    • Another general recommendation set forth by the NHTSA and followed by Oregon states that any child under 13 should ride in the back seat.
