Definition of Grant Writing
Grant writing is the process of identifying, researching and applying for grants. Grant writing requires the ability to conduct in-depth analysis and research in order to advise clients which foundations, government agencies or corporations would be suitable to approach for their funding needs.

Identification

Be a detective. To begin the grant-writing process, the grant writer assists the employer with correctly identifying the need to be met. This requires reviewing all materials, analyzing reports, asking questions and doing site visits to gather more information.
Types

Finding the grant. Once the need is identified, the grant writer reviews available requests for proposals that fit the need. Prospective foundations, government agencies or corporations are evaluated and considered. The grant writer prepares a report for assessment by the executive director or the development director, who will make the selection of grant or grants to write.

The Work The grant writer composes the proposal, using the information he has gathered in addition to any other research or reports that he finds persuasive. The writing process can take weeks or months, depending on the grant's due date and the complexity of the proposal.
Oral Presentation

Explaining your proposal. For some government agencies, an oral presentation is required once the proposal is submitted. The grant writer prepares for the presentation by reviewing the entire proposal and answers any questions about the proposal during the presentation.
Submission and Tracking

Did you remember to write it down? The grant writer submits the proposal once it is approved for submission. It is the grant writer's task to track the due dates, date of submission and date of notification (or when the agency is expected to announce awards) so that the organization knows if the proposal was awarded and when they can expect the grant funding to arrive.
