Environmental Sustainability & Business Ethics
Global warming is the idea that emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fuels are causing climate changes. The amount of CO2 a person or business emits is called a carbon footprint. Businesses that want to offset their carbon footprint have a multitude of environmentally sustainable practices to implement.
-
Green Culture
-
Businesses that adopt sustainable practices need to green the culture of their organization. Ethically, recycling and fluorescent lights are no longer enough. Businesses must do everything through a green filter.
Green Filter
-
Obviously, the product or service you provide should be sustainable. Sustainable business ethics require you to ask is the product or service you are purchasing sustainable?
-
Recycle
-
An immediate action a business can take is to begin recycling programs--not just office paper, but glass, aluminum, metal and plastics as well. Most municipalities have recycling programs. If yours doesn't request the service or designate someone to recycle the articles at a local recycling depot.
Reduce, Reuse
-
Businesses can reduce consumption of natural resources by using durable materials. Lunch rooms should be stocked with washable dishes and utensils to keep disposable plates, glasses and utensils out of the landfill. Toilets and faucets should be low-flow to reduce water use. Appliances and equipment should be energy efficient to reduce energy costs.
Ethical Meets Sustainable
-
Environmentally sustainable businesses will incorporate sustainable thinking into daily practices. Is the product green? Does that vendor practice sustainability? Is there a more sustainable way to do this? Sustainable practices are good for the environment and for business.
