Photoshop vs. Painter
To use Photoshop® or to use Painter™--that is the question. Many people have strong opinions on these products. And, to be honest, the discussion between the two products boils down to what you intend to do with the program.
-
What is Photoshop®?
-
Photoshop® is offered by Adobe System Incorporated and actually consists of several varieties of the Photoshop® product. The most common Photoshop® is a digital photo editing package that is ideal for photographers, graphic designers and web designers. There is a learning curve with this product, but once the basics are under your belt, the possibilities with images are endless.
What is Painter™?
-
Painter™ is offered by Corel Corporation and also offers multiple options for the end-user. The basic Painter™ application is considered a digital art studio to enhance digital photos or create custom art. It allows the ability to sketch, paint and modify photos with features such as brush strokes and textures. After a learning period, the product offers great flexibility to create original digital art.

Comparison of Products
-
When lined up side-by-side, the two products are difficult to compare. As their names suggest, one is more appropriate for photos and the other for painting. A quick comparison of major features and tools is offered here.
Photoshop® offers creative features and numerous plug-ins
Painter™ can take advantage of the Photoshop® plug-ins
Photoshop® tools are based on work normally done in a darkroom

Differences
-
One of the primary differences between the two products is the ability to draw custom art. For example, a line drawn in Painter™ is more crisp and clear than one drawn in Photoshop®. And, it is these drawing functions where the true difference lies. In terms of photo editing, no one program stands out as a leader. Though, many professionals seem to prefer Photoshop® for photo editing and Painter™ for the creation of custom art.
Which Product is Right for You?
-
This is where personal preference and use comes into play. Both applications offer trial versions for download and this is probably the best way to find the application that best fits your needs. But, the names of the programs really do give away the strength of each application.
