Cushing's Disease in Greyhounds

A healthy greyhound may develop Cushing's Disease in its old age.

Once your greyhound reaches its golden years (six and older), it may start developing health problems, such as Cushing's syndrome. Cushing's syndrome, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, affects the endocrine system in dogs, causing an overproduction of the hormone cortisol from the adrenal glands.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Cushing's disease include increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite, high blood pressure, thinning of coat, and recurring urinary tract infections.

Pituitary-Dependent Cushing's

Pituitary-dependent Cushing's is the most common cause of Cushing's syndrome. It is due to a tumor in the pituitary gland. Treatment may involve radiation therapy or medication to control the activity of the adrenal gland.

Adrenal-Dependent Cushing's

One cause of the overproduction of adrenal glands is known as adrenal-dependent Cushing's. This comes from a tumor that may be malignant. Treatment involves surgical removal of the tumor.

Diagnosis

Blood and urine analysis are typical diagnostic tests to detect Cushing's disease. Veterinarians should be aware that greyhounds have different blood values than other breeds of dogs when interpreting results.

Get Immediate Help

If you suspect your dog has Cushing's syndrome, seek treatment immediately. Greyhounds are sensitive to polyuria and muscle wasting. If symptoms are ignored, the disease may progress to other life-threatening disorders.
