Cat Hair Loss and Itching

Cat Hair Loss and Itching thumbnail
There are dozens of reasons for hair loss and itching in cats.

To a cat lover, nothing is scarier-looking than a cat who's missing patches of fur. While there are dozens of reasons for itching and hair loss (alopecia) in cats, some of the most common are flea and food allergies; ringworm; stress; and such illnesses as heart, thyroid and kidney disease.

  1. Home Diagnosis

    • Since there are so many reasons for itching and hair loss in cats, diagnosing the cause of your cat's alopecia without consulting a veterinarian is almost impossible.

    Itch Relief

    • Veterinarians often prescribe such corticosteroid hormones as cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisone and dexamethasone to relieve itching in cats while treating the underlying condition. All have side effects. Antihistamines also provide relief and have less serious side effects than corticosteroids.

    Natural Relief

    • Calendula cream, colloidal oatmeal lotion and aloe vera gel can provide relief for cats with itchy skin. All are available from health food stores. Ask your veterinarian how much to use.

    Essential Fatty Acids

    • The omega-3 fatty acids in fish and wild salmon oil reduce inflammation and can relieve itching in cats. Health food stores and independent pet-supply retailers sell both. Ask your veterinarian how much to give.

    Food Allergies

    • Many veterinarians suggest prescription food with a single novel protein for cats with itchy skin and hair loss due to food allergies. Independent pet-supply stores sell similar products that may be less expensive and more palatable to the cat.
