Home appraisers help determine a home's market value.

Home appraisers determine the current market value of a home based on observations of the home, current market conditions and comparable properties, according to Quality Appraisal Solution and Services. Home appraisers must be certified and receive specialized training. Once certified, home appraisers can also receive additional designations to distinguish themselves from other appraisers.

  1. State-by-State

    • Each state has its own requirements to become certified as a home appraiser in that state, according to realestateabc.com. After fulfilling state requirements, a home appraiser can receive licensure through that state or through a national organization.

    Online Training

    • Online training can be used to fulfill state requirements. Schools like Career Web School offer qualifying and continuing education courses for home appraisers in every state.

    National Association of Realtors

    • The National Association of Realtors keeps a database of qualified and state-approved sources for appraisal education. Visit realtor.org to view the updated list.

    Appraiser Qualifications Board

    • Part of the Appraisal Foundation, the Appraiser Qualifications Board determines the "minimum education, experience and examination requirements for real property appraisers to obtain a state certification," according to the Appraisal Foundation website.

    Residential Accredited Appraiser

    • A residential accredited appraiser (RAA) receives special designations from the National Association of Realtors. RAA's must become a member of NAR, have 1000 hours of professional experience and take 45 hours of tested course work, according to the NAR website.

    General Accredited Appraiser

    • Also a designation of NAR, a general accredited appraiser must be a member of NAR, have 1000 hours of professional experience and take 60 hours of tested course work, according to the NAR website. These designations benefit home appraisers because they show that the appraiser has taken additional steps in their certification.
