What Is a Major Tune-Up on a Car?

A car needs a tune-up to keep running well.

If your car is not running as well as it used to, it might be time for a major tune-up. It may seem like a large expense for a lot of minor fixes, but the overall impact on the way your car runs can be huge.

Lube

A major tune-up includes replacing the oil in the drive shaft, gearbox and final drive. In addition, lubrication is applied to the pivot points and drive chain.

Fluids

The motor oil, brake fluid, clutch fluid and coolant are all changed during a tune-up. A major tune-up also includes flushing the transmission fluid.

Electrical

All tune-ups include the spark plugs and wires being changed. The battery fluid is replenished and the battery is inspected. A major tune-up also includes an inspection of the entire charging system.

Adjustments and Inspection

The mechanic adjusts the valves, the cam chain and the drive chain as well as the brakes throttle and clutch. Tire pressure is checked and corrected if necessary.

Other Aspects of a Major Tune-Up

A major tune-up also includes an inspection of all hoses and carburetion, servicing the cooling system and replacing the air filter. The fuel system is also checked for problems.
