Light Pigmentation Disorders

Light pigmentation disorders cause the skin to have a lighter than normal amount of pigmentation. These disorders have several causes, and they can be managed or treated to prevent further damage to the skin.

  1. Albinism

    • According to the Cleveland Clinic, albinism is an incurable genetic condition that causes an absence of pigmentation in the skin, eyes and hair. This condition can be managed with regular use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage from the sun or skin cancer.

    Skin Damage

    • People who suffer traumas to the skin--such as burns, blisters or infections--can lose skin pigmentation in the damaged area.

    Skin Damage Treatment

    • Skin damage is usually not permanent, and patients may use cosmetics to protect the damaged skin areas while the skin heals.

    Vitiligo

    • Vitiligo is a medical condition that causes the body's own immune system to attack pigment cells. This condition causes white skin patches on the face, the back of the hands or other parts of the body.

    Vitiligo Treatment

    • Patients with vitiligo may use light sensitive drugs or ultraviolet light treatments to improve their appearance.
