Allergies to Sulfur and Sulfate

Sulfur

There is some confusion between sulfur and sulfates. Sulfur is a naturally occurring element that is not a known allergen. Sulfates, on the other hand, are polymers that can cause allergic reactions, particularly ammonium lauryl sulfate.

  1. Sulfur

    • Sulfur is an element essential to human life and does not cause allergic reactions. Sulfur does not exist alone in the body but works together with proteins to form helpful compounds, some that help remove heavy metals from the system.

    Sulfates

    • Sulfates are polymers containing sulfur. Some sulfates, such as glucosamine sulfate, are used in dietary supplements. Other sulfate compounds are useful as detergents but can cause allergic skin reactions.

    Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

    • Sodium lauryl sulfate is a water-soluble compound used in many beauty products, such as shampoo. Allergic reactions to sulfates seem to be increasing, possibly because they are in so many products used daily.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Sulfate allergies first appear on the skin. A rash can appear immediately after contact or develop over time. Severe reactions include hives and swelling of the throat.

    Prevention/Solution

    • People with allergies to certain sulfates simply need to reduce their exposure to the compound. Fortunately, sulfate-free alternative products can be found in health food stores or online.
