In 1886, Carl Walther began his firearm company in Zella-Hehlis, Germany. He laid the foundation for new firearms standards used for military, government and hobbyists. In 1908, the company released the first self-loading 6.35 millimeter pistol. Walther died in 1915 and his sons took over the company.
