Safe Credit Card Information

When using a credit card at a store, over the phone or online, three pieces of information are collected to authorize and process a transaction: The credit card number, expiration date and security code.

  1. Credit Card Number

    • The credit card number is the 16-digit number on the front of the credit card. The number is also coded in the magnetic strip on the back of the card.

    Expiration Date

    • The date of expiration on the front of the card is used in conjunction with the credit card number to approve a transaction for online and phone purchases. The magnetic strip also contains the expiration date.

    Security Code

    • Because of increased credit card fraud exposure, credit card companies have added a three-digit security code to both the back of credit cards and within the magnetic strip. This is a third piece of information that enables merchants to authorize a transaction.

When to Give Out Credit Card Information

    • Only give this information out when you have initiated the transaction, such as when making an online or phone purchase. That is, no one should ever call you and request this information.

When Not to Give Out Credit Card Information

    • Never give this information to someone who asks for it over the phone or email for any reason. Valid businesspeople contacting you about your credit card will already have this information and will not ask for it.
