What Is a Switch & a Hub?
Networks are structures that allow computers to share information and tasks such a files and printing. Hubs and switches are devices used to network computers and computer accessories like printers and external hard drives.

Construction
-
Hubs and switches have openings known as ports. These ports are called RJ-45 jacks, and are usually associated with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs flash and change colors to indicate network status, such as whether devices are connected or if the network is operational.
Considerations
-
The computers and devices also have ports, and cables are used to connect them to the networking device. More than one hub or switch may be used in a network, and sometimes they are even connected directly to each other.
-
Wireless Networking
-
Wireless switches and hubs allow computers to connect to a network without using cables. This is done with the aid of wireless networking accessories such as cards and USB flash drives.
Hubs Versus Switches
-
Hubs are unable to determine which machine is connected to each port. Switches are an advanced type of hub, and are able to distinguish between the differing connections. This allows them to have superior management of networking traffic or information, as well as better security.
Significance
-
Hubs and switches allow computers to connect to the Internet. They also allow people to use internal networks, which are those only seen by people inside a home or business and not by the outside world.
