Skin Discoloration of Calves

A change in skin pigment is a common condition. Skin discoloration on the calves is a problem that can affect men, women or children at any point in their lives.

  1. Consequence

    • Darkened calves may make people feel self-conscious, especially during the summer when many people wear shorts.

    Causes

    • Causes of discolored calves can range from aging to genetics, friction, pregnancy, sun exposure, shaving or medications.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Wear a sun screen on calves or wear long pants. Change to natural fabrics that are not rough on the skin. Use moisturizing shaving cream when shaving the legs.

    Treatments

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several treatments for discolored skin, including medications, laser therapy, freezing (cryotherapy), dermabrasion and chemical peels.

    Considerations

    • It is possible that your insurance company will view skin treatments as a cosmetic procedure and refuse to pay for them.
